Brief information on VIN numbers
The 17 character Vehicle Identification Number was first described in ISO Standard 3779 in 1977 and was later revised in 1983. It is the current standard and is used all over the world by car manufacturers.
The letters O, I and Q are not used in a VIN as they can be mistaken for numbers 0 and 1. Even with this rule, there are several occasions, when the VIN is incorrect in official registers. Also, no dashes or spaces are allowed in a VIN.
